National News: In a major move to address the growing security challenges and acute staff shortage in Punjab’s prisons, the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has approved the recruitment of 500 new personnel in the jail department. This landmark decision not only aims to fortify prison security but also reflects the government’s broader commitment to administrative reforms and transparent governance.
According to an official release from the Chief Minister’s Office, the cabinet has sanctioned the filling of the following posts:
The entire recruitment process will be conducted by the Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board (PSSSB) under the direct recruitment quota, ensuring merit-based selection and fairness throughout the process.
Punjab’s prisons have increasingly been under pressure due to a range of security issues and understaffing. Key concerns include:
1. Smuggling of Mobile Phones and Drugs
The frequent discovery of mobile phones and narcotics inside jail premises has exposed serious lapses in surveillance and internal control mechanisms.
2. Inmate Violence and Gang Conflicts
A shortage of trained personnel has made it difficult to intervene promptly during inmate altercations or gang-related violence.
3. Jailbreak Attempts
There have been recorded attempts by antisocial elements to escape from custody, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced manpower and vigilance.
Given these ongoing issues, the government has acknowledged that no security policy can be truly effective unless supported by a sufficient number of trained and committed staff within correctional facilities.
The inclusion of 20 female matron posts underscores the Punjab government’s emphasis on women’s safety within the correctional system. Female staff play a crucial role in overseeing women inmates, ensuring their dignity, protection, and access to essential services. Trained matrons help prevent incidents of neglect or misconduct and contribute to a more humane correctional environment.
The newly sanctioned positions are expected to bring about several positive changes:
Security professionals and former jail officials have welcomed the decision. Former Jail Superintendent Balbir Singh stated, “Today, prisons are not just facilities for confinement—they are also spaces for reform and rehabilitation. Having trained, experienced, and sufficient staff is not a luxury but a necessity.”
Though the official recruitment notification is yet to be published, it is anticipated shortly. Interested candidates are advised to monitor the PSSSB’s official website, https://sssb.punjab.gov.in, regularly for updates on the application process, eligibility criteria, and exam schedules.
This recruitment drive marks a strategic shift in Punjab’s prison management approach. Far beyond just adding numbers, it represents the government’s intent to create a more secure, responsive, and rehabilitative correctional system. By investing in people, the Mann government is reinforcing its long-term vision for institutional reform and public safety.
